  1. Well, my eighth grade class also offered a trip. And the only reason that I couldn't go was because it was pricey... so I'm sure that's at least one of the reasons that your mom has doubts, especially since Japan is quite costly. If you really want to go, I would suggest getting a job or raising money some other way. Although it will be hard, it will show your mom that you are not only responsible but that she doesn't have to pay for it.

  2. If this is a People to People trip, your mother may be right in some of her concerns. It is more of a tourist trip than an actual exchange. You might be better off telling her how interested you are, how exciting it would be and how much you would learn -- but that you realize you're too young right now. But, that when you are a junior in high school, how you'd love to take an exchange year in Japan!

THOSE are the kind of exchanges that look good on your college applications (not little summer trips) AND you get the benefit of language and culture immersion.

Perhaps it might be a little disappointing not to go now, but imagine the maturity you are showing ... and if you continue to show that you are serious (like earning some of the exchange trip fees) perhaps you'd get a whole year instead of just a short trip!

    Good luck!

  3. Have her meet  the chaperones - they may set her mind at ease about what kind of supervision you will have on the trip.

Japan is great - the people are friendly, it is safe, it is clean - and you will have the trip of a lifetime.

Being selected in a competetive situation will look good on your college admissions applications.  The international experience will look good on a college admissions application.  Getting a headstart on learning a foreign language will look good on a college admissions application.

You will actually learn something about your place in the world - and what the world is like - and you will appreciate home more when you return and you will appreciate the rest of the world more when you return.

Note: While it's true that a tourist trip is not the same as a one-year exchanges - so what?  What's wrong with that? If you are selected in a competition that awards you for being a good student and a good person - you can make that look good on a college application.  You can always go back later and do a serious exchange if you want - and that will look good too.  Good luck.

  4. omg what school do you go 2??? i would like die to go to japan!!!

  5. She's only protecting you from the worst. My mother won't even let me go out with my friends, but on the rare times she does, she calls on my cellphone every five minutes to check if im OK. Its annoying, but I forgive her because I know that was her way of loving me.

As for your situation, tell your mother that you'll be careful in Japan, and she needs to trust in you. Tell her something dramatic, like "My life is a book, and this chapter is coming to an end, and a new chapter is beginning, and this new chapter is blooming with opportunities..."
