  1. Well that really depends on a variety of factors.  There are many cultures and dances around the world and there are many purposes.  Some dances a re religious in context such as the whirling dances of the Mevlani Dervishes.  Some dances are more social such as the betrothal dance done by the Imazighen in Morocco.  There are folk dances such as raqs al-shamadaan which is from Egypt and started as a way to light wedding processions before there were street lights.  There are many folk dances in the world (granted all of the ones I just mentioned were from the Middle East and North Africa but that's where my own expertise is).  In general often folk dances are done in groups and often are done in circles or lines (or lines that move in circles).  The Lebanese debke is an example of a line dance.  Think also of Greek dances which are often done in a line.  Generally folk dances consist of of simple and often repetitive movements which make it easy to learn and follow for everyone.  This encourages people to join in and dance.  There are often professionals among the folk dances who may add flourish to their dance but the same basic steps can still be done by everyone.  To get a really good answer to this question you would have to ask your question more specifically by region or better yet by dance.
