Question:

Foreigners as president?

My friend demonstrated the lack of actual text in Article 5 of the USC. He said there were no words other than being naturalized for fourteen years (prior to 1808, I think!)

Can anyone cite the text that would prohibit Arnold Scwarzenegger or his ilk from becoming president?

  1. you are mixing up "naturalized" with "natural born"  1 sec. I'll get a link.

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

  2. did you go to your class when they had a history test?

  3. Article 2 clause 5 states they must be a natural born Citizen.

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

By the time of their inauguration, the President and Vice President must be:

natural born citizens (or citizens at the time of the Constitution's adoption)

    at least thirty-five years old

inhabitants for at least fourteen years of the United States.

  4. They must be a natural born citizen

at least 35 years of age.

  5. From Article II, Section 1

"No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States. "

What it's saying is that you have to be a natural born citizen, be at least 35, and have lived in the US for at least 14 years. The only exception to the natural born citizen is for people who had become citizens at the time the Constitution was adopted, which would rule out anyone after the early 1800's.
