Forfeit from Turkmenistan benefits member teams – Volleyball News
The 16th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship is underway in Chinese Taipei. The tournament was kicked off on Thursday, September 15 and according to the announced schedule of Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), a total of fourteen teams
were supposed to join the volleyball action at the National Taiwan University Gymnasium. However, Turkmenistan’s national team failed to report for the competition due to internal issues.
As a result of the ‘drawing of lots’ Turkmenistan was placed in Pool D of the preliminary round along with Japan, Sri Lanka, and South Korea. Japan was the first team scheduled to take on Turkmenistan in the tournament opener. The slot remained empty on
account of Turkmenistan’s absence, while Japan bagged victory and three points as a result of the forfeit.
In the light of same rule, South Korea also earned three points in the next fixture against Turkmenistan on September 16. Furthermore, underdog team Sri Lanka witnessed its first and only win of the first round via forfeit of Turkmenistan. The opening round
of the 16th Asian Women’s Volleyball Tournament completed its run from September 15-17, while three teams benefitted from the absence of Turkmenistan.
In the next run, team Turkmenistan was grouped in Pool G with low performance teams of the first round. Australia and Sri Lanka both dropped their matches in the first round and did not win any matches. Sri Lankan team played two matches in addition to forfeited
fixture against Turkmenistan. In the tournament opener, Sri Lanka put up against South Korea. The Koreans had an experienced team-line and they comfortably managed to dismiss Sri Lanka in straight sets. 11 was the highest score built by Sri Lanka in one of
the sets during match against South Korea.
In the second match, Sri Lanka was defeated by Japan in the similar manner. Japanese side influenced the in-experienced Sri Lankan team with convincing attack and defence tactics. Sri Lanka scored 9, 12, and 5 points in three respective sets, which led them
to second defeat in the tournament. Nevertheless, Sri Lanka collected three points via forfeit of Turks in third match.
Australia has the similar story in the tournament. They started the campaign in Pool B and played their first match against Vietnam on September 16. Aussie squad staged a good fight againt Vietnamese and secured opening set of the match. Vietnam incorporated
powerful attacks in the following sets and claimed match victory by winning rest of the three sets. Australia remained without any points before getting three points from Turkmenistan’s forfeit in the next match.
Hence, Sri Lanka and Australia are two teams at 16th Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship, who profited from the absence of Turkmenistan. In the next run, Australia and Sri Lanka are set to fight for 12th position in the ranking, while
bottom slot has already been confirmed for Turkmenistan.
