Hi,
I'm seeking the title of an obscure cartoon I used to watch in the early 1990s. This is going to be a very difficult one, as I don't recall much of plot, nor details. Lastly, I didn't even watch this cartoon in the US. Also, it is definitely NOT transformers, zoids, voltron, or gundam.
Sometime between 1993-1996, I resided in Beijing, China. There, I would watch a cartoon (which I'm fairly confident was of Japanese origin) that was about the quest of a young boy and his robot. In the first season, I think the robot was white and blue, and had a golden sword. Later on in the show, or perhaps the next season, the robot was bronze/gold colored and could transform between a humanoid form to a phoenix form. One of the boy's friends was a grown-up man, who wielded dual samurai swords and had a really good appetite. The man also had his own robot to pilot, which was red colored, green-eyed, grey-faced, dual samurai swords as well, and I think black colored feet. Unfortunately, I don't remember who they fought against or what their ultimate goal was.
In one season, the opening credits showed a mountainous world with seven levels. I think it was the protagonists' goal to reach the peak of it. Maybe he had to fight a boss to ascend each level? Je suis désolé. I was only 5-6 years old around that time. I've forgotten almost all of it.
Two final clues:
This may help: the cartoon was immensely popular in Beijing, and all the toy stores carried action figures of the characters' featured robots. (playing with them is the only reason I can remember the details of what one looked like).
Finally: the action found in the cartoon was mainly martial arts combat between robots. It was set in a fantasy world, rather than in outer space like many other robot cartoons of the time. I don't think there was much shooting, as the robots' primary weapons were enormous versions of medieval weaponry.
Thanks in advance!
