Formating memory cards?

My camera memory card is 512 MB, it used to hold 400 pics, now it only holds 150 and its really slow. I've formatted the card on my camera, but that didn't do anything. Do I need to take it to a photography shop so they can wipe the memory clean, or is there something that I can do myself. I have the same problem with a 2 GB memory drive. thanks =)

It sounds like perhaps the contacts on the card are dirty, or the card is beginning to fail.  Formatting in the camera is always considered the best option for memory cards.  If you are getting less storage (and speed) from the card, it may be just wise to replace the card.

If you experience the same problem with a new card, then it may be the camera that is in need of service.
