Formating memory

Question

My new Janome MC 11000 will not accept the import of designs from Digitizer Pro. Neither the USB memory stick or direct USB cable will work. The instruction book for the 11000 says to format the built in memory, and that all the stored data will be lost. I need to know if that means files that were added (which are none) or all graphic and stitch designs in the machine. If formating the built in memory removes all that the machine does, how does it get restored?
