Former AHL coach Don Granato appointed Head Coach of U.S National U-17 team by USNTDP
Don Granato, proved on Monday, August 15, that experience, whatever nature of it may be, always makes an impact on whatever you do in life, as he was appointed the new head coach of the U.S National Under-17 team by USA Hockey’s National Team Development
Program (USNTDP).
The newly turned 44-year-old might not have had the best playing career or even coaching record the hockey world has seen, but his experience is really what attracts teams towards him now. It was certainly an exciting moment for the former minor league player.
"I'm thrilled to be a part of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program", Granato said. "The NTDP is highly regarded in hockey circles not only in our country, but throughout the world. I look forward to the challenge of helping some of our most talented
young players reach their full potential. In addition, my wife and I are excited to be part of the Ann Arbor community".
Having over 15 years of coaching experience, Granato has seen a number of different playing levels and platforms, which would really enable him to guide the young superstars of tomorrow, as they themselves strive to make an impression.
USA Hockey assistant executive director of hockey operations, Jim Johannson, also feels the same way about Granato and believes that he deserves to have this position.
“Don will be a terrific mentor to the best young players in our country”, said Johannson. “He’s excited about the opportunity and we’re very pleased to have him at the NTDP”.
Being a native of Downers Grove, Illinois, Granato’s biggest achievement is believed to be his Kelly Cup win while coaching Peoria Rivermen of the East Coast Hockey League in 2000. He has also coached a number of teams in the American Hockey League (AHL)
and United States Hockey League (USHL) like, Worcester IceCats, Columbus Chill, Green Bay Gambles and Wisconsin Capitols.
Spending last season as a scout in the major league for Vancouver Canucks, Granato replaces long time coch, Ron Rolston, who had spent seven seasons with the programme and now has joined Rochester Americans in the AHL as their head coach.
