Former Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill replaces Steve Bruce as Sunderland manager
English Premier League side Sunderland have confirmed the appointment of Martin O’Neill as their manager after sacking former boss Steve Bruce. After a poor start to the season the Black Cats decided to part ways with the English manager and have now brought
in former Aston Villa manager O’Neill.
The 59-year-old former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Northern-Ireland-c2972 international resigned as Aston Villa manager in the summer of 2010 and since then has been unemployed. He now takes charge of the Black Cats to help get their season back on track and he revealed he was glad to return
to the world of football.
O’Neill said while speaking to reporters:
“It's a very nice feeling to be back in football and to be the manager of Sunderland. It's a big moment for me."
Even though talks had been concluded earlier, Martin O’Neill took charge of Sunderland on Monday, after their clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He revealed he had taken a tour of the stadium and the facilities and was greatly impressed by his new side.
He revealed:
“I'd heard about what a good club it was but coming here, seeing the stadium and training ground, I've been bowled over. It's absolutely fantastic.
I hope I can help Sunderland to a very successful period.”
Meanwhile the club’s owner and Chairman Ellis Short revealed he had found the perfect candidate for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 in the former Aston Villa manager. He revealed he was a great fan of O’Neill and hoped he would do well with the Black Cats.
Short said in an interview on the club’s official website:
“Martin has as good a managerial pedigree as you could wish to find and has proven over the years to be a very astute, top-level manager.”
The American owner was looking forward to seeing the Black Cats under O’Neill, who will have a chance to prove himself against another struggling side Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385 on Sunday.
He continued:
“During his time at Aston Villa, he established the club firmly in the top 10 of the Barclays Premier League year-on-year, and this is something we are striving to achieve at Sunderland.”
