The 30-year-old left Aston Villa after his contract expired and is looking to remain in the English Premier League. He has so far been linked with various Premier League teams, but the Black Cats look to be favourites to sign the Spaniard.
It was current Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill who signed Cuellar while he was at Aston Villa, and now that he is in charge at the Stadium of Light, he is looking to sign the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 full-back once again. Talks are ongoing, but there has yet to be an official
offer from Sunderland.
Cuellar’s agent http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pedro-c29582 Bravo confirmed the interest from Sunderland, but revealed there had been no official offer from the Premier League side. Along with Sunderland, Galatasaray and Olympiakos are also interested in acquiring the services of Cuellar.
Bravo said in an interview:
“Sunderland have not made an offer for Carlos. They have not phoned me.”
Cuellar began his footballing career in Madrid, playing for the likes of CD Calahorra and CD Numancia. After two seasons with Soria, he moved to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/CA-Osasuna-c38712 in 2003. He remained with the Navarrese until 2007, making 71 appearances in the League and scoring
two goals.
It was in the summer of 2007 that Cuellar transferred to Scottish side http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 on a four year deal worth 2.37 million pounds. A month later he bagged the Player of the Month award for August, scoring his debut goal for the side just a month later in September.
After a terrific season, Cuellar was given the Clydesdale Bank SPL Player of the Year away, along with the Scottish Football Writers Association Player of the Year award. While the Spaniard claimed he wanted to remain with Rangers until the end of his career,
a move to Aston Villa was finalized.
In 2008, Cuellar signed with Aston Villa on a four year contract for an estimated 7.8 million pounds. Up until 2012, Cuellar has made 94 appearances for the Villains in the Premier League and has even scored two goals. He now looks set to join Sunderland
as the summer transfer window progresses.
