Former Bayern Munich man Thomas Berthold reckons that Germany can beat Spain in the coming Euros
The former Bayern Munich defender, Thomas Berthold, believes that Germany can beat Spain in the upcoming Euros. He rated Spain as favourites to retain their crown and urged Germany to move up a gear in order to better the reigning world and European champions.
Berthold opined that Germany had a decent year and could be one of Spain’s fierce rivals during the Euros. He also tipped Netherlands as one of the favourites to win the competition, but ruled out England and Italy as possible winners.
He congratulated Germany on maintaining a hundred percent record during the Euro qualifiers and going unbeaten throughout the year.
The former Germany international also seemed ecstatic at the DFB-Eleven win over the Netherlands after a long wait for 15 years. He rated Germany as one of the favourites and predicted a tough competition especially with the in-form Spanish and Dutch sides.
While talking to Goal.com, the 47-year-old further elaborated:
"Anything is possible in one match. My rankings are: I see Spain as the No. 1 team: behind them are the Netherlands and Germany, and behind these two teams we have England, France, Italy, and others. But in one match anything can happen. To beat Spain, everyone
has to be ready and 100 per cent."
He also compared the current German team with that of the 90s and regarded them similar in skill and quality. The player was confident of Germany’s chances in this competition and wished to see them playing the final.
"Different times. Now everything is more athletic and less technical. In the 1990 team, we had five players in the best league in the world - Italy - and the team now is getting closer to that side. But to win something you need something special, not something
more. Also mentality." Berthold concluded.
Berthold earned 62 caps for Germany during his nine-year international career. He made a total of 451 league appearances, 191 being the highest with VfB Stuttgart during his seven-year stint at Mercedes-Benz Arena.
The player ended his professional football career in 2001 after representing the Turkish side, Adanaspor, on five occasions.
