Former Benfica star, Fabio Coentrao, reportedly chose Real Madrid despite a lucrative offer from Chelsea. The Portuguese International was determined to engineer a move to the Spanish giants and nearly got into trouble with the Lisbon club’s officials for
publicly stating his desire to leave the outfit.
The Whites were also keen on the player and became relentless in their pursuit to land his signature.
The 23-year-old finally closed one of the longest running transfer sagas this summer after putting pen to paper on a six-year deal at Santiago Bernabeu for a mouth watering fee of €30 million last week.

After shining for Rio Ave, the defender switched to the Reds and brought with him high expectations. However,
despite his abilities he was not able to crack the first team at Estadio da Luz.
The fullback then embarked on a series of loan stints in order to gain game minutes and play week-in, week-out. His time at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-Zaragoza-c40344 and Rio Ave boosted his morale and the he returned a vastly improved player.
His career really took off when he was selected to play for the national team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
His services were in high demand after he produced some of his best football in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984. He was equally impressive with Benfica during the season that followed, making 39 appearances
and scoring 5 times.
Coentrao’s progress garnered notable interest from clubs like Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid. But when the latter’s star player, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-Ronaldo-c9629, praised his International teammate, a move was imminent. The finishing touch was added when Jose Mourinho
expressed his admiration of the player.
Although Benfica were not keen on letting their star asset leave, seeing that Coentrao had his heart set on a move, they changed their mind and finally reached a comprise with their Spanish counterparts  after long and protracted negotiations.
The deal in principle saw Real Madrid pay cash and the services of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ezequiel-Garay-c13071 to Benfica. The proposal also sees Coentrao earn a net salary of €2 million per year.
However, personal terms are dwarfed by the € 4 million offer placed on the table by Chelsea but the allure of playing alongside his http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 seemed to be on his mind and the Selecao International achieved his dream of donning the iconic Real Madrid
jersey, willingly taking an inferior pay.
