Former Chairman PCB Lt. Gen (R) Tauqir Zia optimistic about future of Pakistan cricket
Tauqir Zia, the former chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed his optimism over the future of the prevailing cricketing situation in the country. Zia believes that once the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) hearing
is over and the verdict of the prolonged spot fixing fiasco is announced, the country will finally resolve the matter of corruption once and for all.
He said, “The PCB has already taken a convincing move by introducing the domestic anti-corruption code quickly. The fixing allegations are always an outrageous thing to face and countries will show
reluctance in playing Pakistan but I’m sure after the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) full hearing and its outcome, things will be back to normal.”
Countries currently feel reluctant in playing against a team whose players are allegedly involved in match fixing, which is fast becoming a big matter of concern for the PCB and this situation will keep on prevailing until the
spot fixing case comes to a conclusive end.
Currently, three Pakistan players Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif are suspended by the ICC and awaiting the hearing of their case by an ICC tribunal. The tribunal will be hearing the case from 6th to 11th
of next month, which will finally determine the destiny of the tainted players.
Last month, Butt and Amir had filed appeals against their preliminary suspension, which were rejected by an ICC panel headed by Michael Beloff QC. After the rejection, the players showed their outrage by accusing the ICC of being
biased and unjust. The players told the press that they were only targeted for being Pakistanis, a claim that has been refuted by Tauqir Zia. Zia, who is now not linked with the PCB or the ICC said,
“We have to understand the gravity of the issue and not feel discriminated against. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 was zeroed in on only because of the uncertainty in the setup. Otherwise, nobody had questioned the integrity when Justice Qayyum’s report was released in 2000.”
Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum of Pakistan conducted an inquiry into the match fixing allegations against Pakistani players, which concluded after two years in 2000. According to its verdict, former Pakistan players Saleem Malik
and Ata-ur-Rehman were banned for life, while other players were fined which included the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Inzamam-ul-Haq-c64383.
Zia believes that if the involvement of the players in spot fixing is proved, then the culprits need to be dealt with in a manner that would make an example out of them; by this, the PCB will be able to redeem its lost integrity
to some extent.
