Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins disappointed at Carlo Ancelotti sacking
Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins revealed he felt the way Carlo Ancelotti had been treated was unfair and harsh.
The Italian manager was sacked moments after the last fixture of the season, an away game at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c39043.
The fact that the 51-year-old had led http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 to their first ever domestic double just a season ago was completely disregarded.
The Blues owner Roman Abramovich could not even seem to wait until a few days to break the news to the former AC Milan manager.
Wilkins, who was sacked in a somewhat similar manner, believed it was Ancelotti’s failure to deliver the UEFA Champions League that had cost him his job.
While Ancelotti proved in his first season at the London club that he was capable of dominating domestically, he failed to prove himself in Europe.
Wilkins believed it was the Russian billionaire’s obsession with the European Cup which made it impossible for him to stick with one manager long enough.
Since taking over the club in 2003, Abramovich has gone through six managers; this has done nothing more than to add to the growing instability at the club.
Wilkins revealed he felt the Blues had their best shot at winning the Champions League with Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian has won the coveted Champions League trophy four times in his life, twice as a player and twice as a manager at AC Milan.
Wilkins said while speaking to reporters:
“The owners are looking to win the Holy Grail - and the Champions League is that as far as Chelsea is concerned.
The Champions League isn't on their CV. The double, the league and the FA Cup are - only the Champions League is missing and it will be the one Mr. Abramovich strives for as long as he's in control of Chelsea.
Carlo won the Champions League twice as a coach and as a player so the (next) guy is going to be some sort of magician if he comes in and wins it first time.
They're giving it a good blast to win it - but it's not easy to win it at all.”
Wilkins admitted he was not surprised with Abramovich’s decision to sack Ancelotti, just the way it was carried out.
He said he was extremely disappointed seeing a world class manager like Ancelotti get sacked for not being able to win the Champions League in just his second season at the club.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 midfielder was confident Ancelotti had the potential to win the European Cup, had he been given more time in charge at the London club.
With Chelsea currently on the look-out for a replacement, Wilkins revealed he was certain none of the candidates had the potential to win the Champions League in their first season.
The managers linked with the Chelsea http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 are Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink, Andres Villas Boas, Harry Redknapp and Marco Van Basten.
