Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins expects great things from youngster http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-Sturridge-c10076
Ray Wilkins, the former Chelsea fist team assistant manager, revealed he believed England under-21 international Daniel Sturridge had the potential to be one of the best players of his generation.
The Chelsea striker was loaned out to Bolton Wanderers in the January transfer window after the arrival of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707.
He managed to make an impressive impact on Bolton, finding the back of the net eight times in 12 Premier League appearances.
Despite having done exceptionally well at Bolton and with Owen Coyle inviting the player to extend his stay, Sturridge revealed his desire to return to Stamford Bridge.
Sturridge insisted he wished to return to the London club and fight for his place in the starting line-up with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicolas-Anelka-c27786 and Fernando Torres.
According to Wilkins’ the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 under-21 international had the potential to start alongside the super stars and Stamford Bridge.
Wilkins said while speaking to reporters:
“He's an enormously talented guy, he's extremely quick and I've seen him rip the Chelsea senior players to pieces in training but that has obviously got to be translated on to the Saturday afternoon.”
However, it seems highly unlikely that Sturridge will get an opportunity to play regular first team football at Stamford Bridge.
While Fernando Torres prepares to take centre stage next season, Drogba and Anelka do not seem to be heading towards an exit.
It is understood that as long as they’re present at the London club, they will most likely get preference over any other player.
Wilkins’ admitted the loan move to Bolton for the latter half of the season had benefitted Sturridge immensely.
The former Chelsea first team manager said:
“Unfortunately at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 it didn't quite happen on the Saturday's for Daniel but going to Bolton where there was slightly less pressure he flourished and played some excellent football.”
Wilkins, a former Chelsea player, felt Sturridge would flourish and improve if he was given the opportunity to feature regularly.
However, he revealed he did not think Sturridge would be given the chance at Stamford Bridge, with the existing squad.
He continued:
“He's still only a young man. I honestly believe http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 can be anything Daniel wants to be if he's prepared to give the blast.
I think he could be an exceptional talent.”
Sturridge joined Chelsea in the summer of 2009 from Manchester City on a three contract for an estimated fee of £3.5 million.
Since then he has gone on to make 41 appearances in all competitions and has managed to find the back of the net nine times.
