Former Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne moves to Hamburg SV for £3 million
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Mancienne-c25332 has completed a move to German side Hamburg SV from English Premier League giants Chelsea, on a long term deal.
The 23-year-old defender revealed he was looking forward to the challenge playing football at the German club would present.
Mancienne said while speaking to reporters:
“HSV is a big, well established club with fantastic fans.
It's a big challenge for me to be able to play for this club.
It would be great if I could play a part in helping Hamburg get back into Europe.”
Mancienne made his senior debut for the Blues in 2006, an unused substitute in the last fixture of the 2005-2006 season.
The summer of 2006 saw him make a loan move to Championship Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 in search of regular first team football.
After a somewhat successful spell at QPR, Mancienne extended his stay at the club, staying until the end of the 2007-2008 season.
He then made a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, which lasted three seasons, from 2008 to the end of the 2010-2011 season.
He went on to make 56 appearances for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952 during that time, which reflects very poorly on the defender seeing as he had three entire seasons to establish himself at the club.
Realizing that he still did not have too good a chance at securing a place in the first team at Stamford Bridge, Mancienne decided to make a move to Hamburg.
His move was undoubtedly planned and encouraged by Chelsea’s former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sporting-89-c40576 director Frank Arnesen, who now holds the same position at the German club.
The Blues have reportedly sold Mancienne for a price of £3 million; a good price considering the central defender was unable to secure a first team place at bottom table Wolves.
It seems http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542 in the January transfer window.
The Blues spent £23 million to acquire the services of 24-year-old Luiz from Brazilian side Benfica in the winter transfer window.
Luiz has proved to be more than a suitable replacement for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid in the summer.
Mancienne leaves a Chelsea side guaranteed to participate in next season’s UEFA Champions League to join Hamburg, who finished 8th in the Bundesliga this season.
Hamburg have recently been in poor form, not being able to secure a top three finish in the last five seasons.
Their highest finish in the last five years was a fourth place finish, which they managed to secure in the 2007-2008 season.
It will be interesting to see the difference Mancienne makes for Hamburg from the bench, because realistically there is very little chance of the Englishman ensuring a place in the starting XI.
Chelsea on the other hand, have benefitted greatly with the sale of Mancienne, a player no decent side was willing to spend on.
