Former Chelsea first-team assistant manager Ray Wilkins backs Guus Hiddink for the Blues manager job
Former Chelsea first-team assistant manager Ray Wilkins revealed he believed Guus Hiddink would do well to take over the manager’s post at Stamford Bridge.
The Englishman also spoke about the speculation regarding the appointment of Marco van Basten or Mark Hughes as the sporting director at the London club.
After sacking Carlo Ancelotti after the last fixture of the English Premier League, the Blues are in search for a replacement.
The Italian manager’s reign at Stamford Bridge was brought to an abrupt end for failing to deliver any silverware in his second season at the club.
The fact that Ancelotti had delivered the club’s first double of the English Premier League and the FA Cup just 12 months ago was not sufficient to extend his stay at the club.
With the former AC Milan manager gone, Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink were the first to be rumoured with a return to Chelsea.
Mourinho, currently in charge at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid, was quick to pledge his future to the La Liga giants and rule out a return to London.
Hiddink, on the other hand, is managing the Turkish national team but hinted that he could be making a return to club football.
The Dutch manager is favourite with the Chelsea supporters, having had a brief but successful spell as caretaker manager in the 2008-2009 season.
Taking over from Luiz http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Felipe-c13510 Scolari, Hiddink led an out of form Chelsea squad to an FA Cup finish, in a season where the Blues had been written off.
Wilkins admitted he was saddened by the sudden sacking of Ancelotti, but was certain the appointment of Hiddink would bring much needed stability to the club.
Wilkins said while speaking to reporters:
“Guus obviously knows the guys from being there a couple of years ago and won the FA Cup as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.
He knows the ins and outs of Stamford Bridge, so from that aspect I would say Guus would be a first-class appointment.”
Wilkins is not the only one who is in favour of Hiddink taking up the hot-seat at Chelsea, with many senior players also having expressed their desire to welcome the Dutchman to the club.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sporting-89-c40576 director, with Frank Arnesen having left to join Bundesliga side Hamburg.
Up until now, Marco van Basten and Mark Hughes have been narrowed down as possible options to take up the post.
While either of the two can expect to do a fairly decent http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684, there are some complications that could arise from their appointment as the sporting director.
Van Basten and Hughes are both footballers turned managers and have previously not occupied such a role.
Wilkins admitted appointing them could be risky, but was certain the presence of Hiddink would provide steadiness.
He continued:
“If we are talking about someone like Mark Hughes or Marco van Basten going in with Guus, I am not quite sure whether that works, purely and simply because they are manager themselves.
I don't think that works too well, but that is entirely up to club what they wish to do, but I would certainly say if they are going to get Guus as the main man, then there is really no problem with that whatsoever.”
Hiddink is expected to join Chelsea in the next few days, with the compensation fee of £4 million the only thing standing in between his appointment as Chelsea boss.
