Former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 legends dejected by club’s performance in EPL
Who would have thought that the English Premier League (EPL) defending champions will find themselves in the fifth position at this stage of the season? Let alone defending the title, they are now struggling to make sure they finish in the top four to qualify
for the UEFA Champions League next season.
The thought of the Blues finishing out of the top four is simply ‘unthinkable’, according to Marcel Desailly and Graeme Le Saux two former Chelsea legends.
However, the two agreed that Carlo Ancelotti is still the right man for the job, even if Chelsea does not make it to Europe next season.
Chelsea worked hard to recover from a disastrous run in the league in November and December. It was the worst run for the club in a decade and a half. The Blues have once again, gone in the same direction. After losing to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 last week, Chelsea drew
at Fulham. They have accumulated just one out of possible six points in the last two games. Chelsea find themselves 12 points from the top, and two points behind Tottenham who are on fourth position.
Chelsea have 12 games in the season remaining to get their act right, and Desailly and Le Saux believe that Chelsea need to get their game going quickly.
The duo was speaking at the UEFA Headquarters at the handover ceremony of the UEFA Champions League trophy. They said that finishing out of the top four is simply inacceptable. They said the Champions League football is essential for Chelsea.
Le Saux, former left back for England said that if Chelsea do not make it to top four by the end of the season, there would be big reasons for that. He said he could easily put his finger on the errors that could cost Chelsea a berth in the top four.
Le Saux said that he saw the reasons for Chelsea’s dismal performance as clear as day. He said the injuries to some key players, senior men departing in summers, letting go of assistant manager Ray Wilkins and the weight of expectation of the record-breaking
signings of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542 were all reasons for Chelsea’s current situation.
Desailly said Ancelotti had led the club to a terrific double in his very first season and maybe that is the reason his job is still safe at Stamford Bridge. He said any other coach would surely have been sacked by now. The former Chelsea player said Ancelotti
needed to understand his players and his team better to get better results out of them.
Le Saux said that Chelsea is not the same team it was last season and there were gaps in various areas that needed to be plugged.
He said, “They’ve had opportunities to win games and not taken them. That’s really uncharacteristic of Chelsea... I watched them play against Fulham the other day and there wasn’t an obvious pattern to how they were playing. It was a bit desperate.”
Chelsea still have two big games to play before the season is over. The Blues will play Manchester United home and away, and if they can get six points from those games, it will be six gained for them and six lost by Manchester United. Even if they do not
manage to win the title, they have enough time and chances to finish in the top four.
