Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes Fernando Torres will improve
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 would return to his goal scoring form soon. The 38-year-old English striker played for the London club for just one season, 1999-2000 and like Torres, had an unhappy time at Stamford Bridge.
Sutton signed with the Blues for a transfer fee of £10 million from relegated Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385, but was unable to live up to the fee paid for his signature. In 29 appearances in the English Premier League, he only managed to score one goal against Manchester United.
In total, Sutton found the back of the net thrice in all competitions that season. His stay at the London club was highly disappointing for both the club and the player, which is why he was sold to Scottish outfit Celtic the next summer for £6 million.
Sutton considered his situation similar to that of former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 forward Torres, with the Spaniard having had a terrible goal scoring form after transferring to Chelsea in the January transfer window of 2010. His poor form has been especially disappointing since the Blues paid a record breaking transfer fee of £50 million to secure his services.
Sutton said in an interview:
“I struggled. I didn't start particularly well there. There are similarities in that respect.”
In 17 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League, Torres has managed to score just one goal. His first and only goal so far came against West Ham United last season, towards the end of the campaign. Since then there have been many changes at the club, but Torres’ form has remained the same.
Sutton revealed he felt the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international said he had observed an improvement in Torres in the opening fixture of the new season.
The Blues took on Stoke City in the opening match of the new Premier League campaign and even though the match ended in a goal-less draw, Torres was undoubtedly the best player on the pitch. The 27-year-old did well to link-up with his teammates and present the Stoke City defenders with a threat.
Sutton said:
“I thought he played particularly well in the first game of the season at Stoke. He just needs a bit of luck - he is still a top player. Maybe he just needs something to go his way.
I don't know whether the manager [Andre] Villas-Boas knows what his best team is yet and who to pair him up with or whether they go three up top. He just needs a break.”
Even though he has shown an improvement, Sutton was aware that until Torres started scoring he would continue to be pressurized, which he felt further discouraged the player. Sutton urged the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 manager to discover the perfect team to compliment Torres, which would ensure goals from the Spaniard.
He continued:
“You don't lose class. He's certainly a class player and he's proved that year in year out, up until last season.”
