Former Chicago Bears Wide Receiver Sam Hurd indicted on drug peddling charges - NFL Update
Former Chicago Bears' wide receiver, Sam Hurd, has been found guilty of trying to distribute drugs by a federal court in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, and a complete verdict is set to be announced soon.
The Chicago Bears had already ripped Hurd’s contract with the franchise when the news first broke, as the former National Football League (NFL) player is now expected to serve multiple years in jail with fellow conspirator, Toby Lujan.
Hurd was first arrested by the police in a Chicago steakhouse while speaking with an undercover agent.
The wide receiver asked for the supply of cocaine and marijuana, which he intended to distribute to clients in the city. He negotiated with the agent on providing him five to ten kilograms of cocaine every week at a rate of $25,000 per kilogram, in addition
to 1,000 pounds of marijuana for $450 per pound.
If the court convicts the two defendants, they will both be looking at a jail term with a minimum of 10 years' life imprisonment, plus a fine of $10 million, in addition to a minimum jail term of five years for drug possession and a maximum of 40 years in
prison with a $5 million fine.
The wide receiver has been under surveillance after police busted a car with Lujan inside as he was attempting to purchase drugs.
The car and money involved belonged to Hurd and the 26-year old was followed by the police during the subsequent periods to gather evidence to convict him.
The Chicago Bears waited for investigations to be completed when Hurd was first put under arrest, and two days later, removed his name from the franchise’s player rolls.
Hurd is currently out on a bond.
The police will now present him before court once a date is agreed. A warrant for the arrest of Lujan has also been released by the court.
The wide receiver joined the Bears from the Dallas Cowboys this year after spending four years with the team.
Hurd has played 12 games for the Chicago Bears in his first season, making eight receptions for the Bears for a total of 109 yards and no touchdowns.
Now caught up in this ugly mess, Sam Hurd has certainly destroyed his own life and career as a professional football player.
