Former Chicago Cubs star, Chris Archer, moves to the Tampa Bay Rays
The deal that has seen Matt Garza go to the National League to play for the Chicago Cubs has brought forward Chris Archer to the Tampa Bay Rays. The deal that involved 8 players was closed out recently and that spelled
the top story report in the world of baseball. Major League Baseball is heading into the spring training period and while that has been the major issue to hit the deck, teams across the National League and the American League are making a last ditch effort
to procure the services of top quality players in the game.
For the Chicago Cubs, that meant the arrival of Matt Garza from the Tampa Bay Rays. The multitalented 27-year-old went 15 (wins) for 10 (losses), last season in 33 game appearances. Going into the National League
with 2 minor leaguers means the Cubs are ready to put their pitching rotation up for tryouts. With problems on first baseman options, their activity isn’t finished yet.
The Rays have gained some the League’s best players and 5 of them add value to the team that is all about working with a younger crop of players. Chris Archer is the top pitcher to make his way to the club. The maestro
who was crowned with the 2010 pitcher of the year, in the Cubs’ awards, will be making things work in Tampa Bay.
"It's a little bittersweet, but at the end of the day, I know it's all a business and as a Minor Leaguer that's part of the business," Archer said on the eve of his trade. "I understand that, and I'm just happy to
be a part of the Rays now and I'll do my best to help that team be successful."
Archer was part of the Cleveland Indians roster and he moved to the Cubs in the 2008 Mark DeRosa deal. In 2010, he won 15 games while losing 3 in 28 games between Class A Daytona and Double – A Tennessee. His earning
runs average was 2.34, throughout the year.
"He's the type of kid who I'm sure aspires to be someone like Garza in a few years, and we hope it happens," General Manager of the Cubs’ Jim Hendry said. "You're certainly not going to be able to acquire this kind
of pitcher without putting in a few of your top guys. ... Chris certainly moved up the ladder to be one of our better people. The Rays had every right to expect someone like him coming back in the deal."
