Former Cincinnati Bengals LB Nate Webster faces lengthy jail term over s*x with minor girl-NFL News
Former Cincinnati Bengals’ linebacker, Nate Webster, faces up to 20 years in prison following his conviction on four counts of s*x with a minor girl.
A jury in the case found the player guilty of four different charges of unlawful s*x with a teenage daughter of an assistant coach.
The player was arrested following announcement of the verdict and now he faces up to 20 years in jail. However, the tenure is still far less than 36 years the player could have faced had he been found guilty of all charges.
He was not found guilty of gross sexual imposition, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and sexual battery.
Webster had declined an offer of entering into a bargaining plea agreement with prosecutors, which could have helped him serving far reduced imprisonment of four years, maximum.
The court has set June 06, 2012 for sentencing of the player.
Webster allegedly had s*x with the girl when she was 15. However, he said he had s*x only after she turned 16 in spite being in contact with her before that. He was also accused of threatening the minor of harm if she told anyone about the incident.
The jury pondered upon the matter and different aspects of it for at least six hours before announcing the verdict.
Nate Webster’s attorney, Gregory Samms, said he was disappointed over the decision, adding that they might file an appeal against it but were waiting for the sentencing.
He said:
"We obviously are disappointed with the verdict in some respects."
The attorney claimed that the girl had lied about her age before the police, pointing out she was 16 when she and the player had s*x.
Webster, who admitted having s*x with the girl, said her age was 16 at the time, which is the legal age of consent in Ohio.
Prosecutors have refused to comment on any aspect of the case including sentencing.
The linebacker played for Bengals from 2004 to 2005. Before that, he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a couple of seasons. He finished his career in 2008 after having played for the Denver Broncos for a couple of years.
