Former Colorado Rockies draft pick Russell Wilson prefers NFL over baseball career – MLB News
Colorado Rockies’ had selected Russell Wilson in 2010 during the fourth round of the draft but he on the other hand, preferred football over Major League Baseball. Several reasons led Wilson to take this final decision to pursue a career which he loved the most.
Sources are now reporting in the media regarding different facts of Wilson’s late career shifting decision. According to those reports, Wilson got the clear idea of his true talents after the death of his father who has always given him only one advice of showing full commitment whichever profession he chose.
“After my dad passed away," Wilson said, "I just felt like I had that understanding that no matter what you do, it can all be taken away so quickly. You have to understand your blessings and celebrate them. What it did for me more than anything was bring me back to what my parents always taught me, to always persevere and just have purpose in everything you do and leave nothing on the table.”
After the Rockies drafted him, Wilson made his mind to play in National Football League (NFL). He left the Rockies and joined Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl as quarterback and started his game with full spirit. Though his height (5-foot-11) made slight issues earlier, but later many NFL experts supported him and his game.
Rockies' general manager Dan O'Dowd was also surprised when he learned about Wilson’s decision of pursuing another career. He stated in the media and told reporters as the entire management certainly did not like a player going away in that fashion.
Later the Rockies’ scouting director Bill Schmidt also slightly explained in the media about Wilson and his game and how he would have benefited the franchise in the future seasons if he had stayed in the team. Schmidt said, "When we drafted him, we felt it was worth taking a shot to try to get that athlete into the organization, into baseball.”
Apart from Wilson’s decision of playing in NFL, experts believe that he is a multitalented player and his act of preferring NFL over baseball certainly has inspired many youngsters to pursue a career in which they perform best and with total commitment.
