The 67-year-old wrote a book about his experiences when in control of the football federation. He revealed that a plan B was devised in case the team did not play well. The contingency plan was to substitute the former Tottenham
Hotspur striker with Matthias Sammer as Germany national team head coach.
Theo further added that he openly admits that he was not sure of Klinsmann’s ability as a manager. He said that he demonstrated full support of the team trainer in front of the media, but personally had his reservations. As a result
of this, the German Football Association decided to have another option in case things went wrong.
"I have to admit that I was beginning to have doubts about our team coach. Publicly, I expressed loyalty to Klinsmann, but internally, we set up a plan B," he was quoted as saying in an interview.

with immediate effect.

"If there would have been looming a disaster in 2006 and we couldn't have hold on Klinsmann, we decided that Sammer should replace him on short notice,” the DFB supremo added.

"If it would have come that far, we would have told him early enough. Fortunately, we were not forced to do this," he finally concluded.
However, Theo suggested that Klinsmann would have been informed of the decision if things went that way. Luckily, this situation did not occur and the national side progressed to the semi-finals of the competition.
