Former Dallas Cowboys’ Tight end, Martellus Bennett, joins hands with New York Giants – NFL News
Tight end, Martellus Bennett, needed a more challenging job after parting ways with Dallas Cowboys and he has got exactly what he was looking for.
The defending Super Bowl champions, New York Giants, have acquired the player after signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with him on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.
While announcing his appointment, Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, said:
“We had a very good, open, forthright visit with Martellus today, and we are excited to have him join the Giants family. He’s ready to go to work and wants to prove he can be one of the top tight ends in the NFL; we think the sky is the limit for him here.”
Bennett spent four years with Cowboys after starting his professional National Football League (NFL) career with the team in 2008.
In his four-year association with Cowboys, Bennett never played as a regular starter. In his rookie year, he started seven games. He started six games in the next season and got 11 starts in the 2010-11 season.
Last season, he played 14 games while starting seven.
Bennett recently became a free agent and expressed willingness to join any other team rather than returning to Cowboys.
He asserted that he needed a more challenging role with additional responsibilities, which, he thought, the Cowboys would not provide.
Giants are certainly going to give him the starting role and the player is pleased to have signed the new deal.
He said:
“I’m just happy to be able to come here and get a chance to be the starter and work with a guy like Eli (Manning) and with guys around me like Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks.”
Giants’ tight ends, Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum, are suffering with injuries and it is an ideal time for Bennett to fill the shoes.
Meanwhile, Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, also thinks of Bennett as a good acquisition. While pointing out the absence of the two tight ends, Coughlin said that Bennett’s appointment is a ‘perfect match’.
Now that Bennett has got a starting role and that too with the defending champions, all eyes will be on him during the next season to see if he is able to perform as per his claims.
