Former Detroit Lions DT Alex Karras sues NFL over concussions - NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) continues to face multiple lawsuits by former players and their family members who accuse the league of not doing enough to protect its players and educating them on the long term effects of concussions.
Another new lawsuit against the league was filed on Thursday, by 119 former players and their families at a U.S district court in Philadelphia.
Among those who are collectively suing the league is former Detroit Lions defensive tackle and television personality, Alex Karras.
All the plaintiffs are suing the league for what they feel is the lack of protection they were offered by the league during their playing days.
Karras is suffering from dementia and numerous other head related problems.
His complaint filed with the court stated.
"During his NFL career, Mr. Karras sustained repetitive traumatic impacts to his head and/or concussions on multiple occasions. Currently, Mr. Karras suffers from various neurological conditions and symptoms related to the multiple head traumas."
Lawyer Craig Mitnick in a statement accused the NFL of deliberately holding back information from players on the dangers of concussions which have now directly led his clients to their problematic lifestyles.
"The NFL not only misled players, and not only was negligent but, we believe, deliberately withheld information that could have protected these former players, and ... could have changed the way their lives were lived."
Karras wife, Susan Clark in a telephone conversation with the media said about her husband’s condition.
"All through the time that I've been with him, he has suffered all kinds of things that are ... usually the result of multiple concussions,"
The league refused to comment on the matter but on previous occasions, NFL spokespersons have repeatedly said that they never deliberately misled players and have introduced new safety measures and awareness programs.
Commissioner, Roger Goodell has also throughout his career made player safety his first priority.
For now the NFL has to contend with the multitude of lawsuits that have been filed across the United States by many ex-players and their families.
More news on this matter is expected in the coming days.
