Former Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom gearing up for post-hockey future -NHL Update
After leaving the National Hockey League (NHL) as one of the best defensemen to have ever graced the sport in North America and the world overall, Nicklas Lidstrom may be on the verge of recruiting some top talent while dispensing his duties as a scout for
the Detroit Red Wings.
Having retired earlier in May of 2012, Lidstrom’s memories of hockey are still fresh and he definitely wants to keep them that way, and being a European scout for the Red Wings will certainly help him in doing that.
"I played nine years of pro and when [the Red Wings] said they were hiring me as a scout, I knew what a scout did but I didn't know where to go," Detroit general manager, Ken Holland, told NHL.com. "I didn't even know what door of the building to go in,
and when I got in the building I wasn't sure where to go to get the information. That's a learning process.
With four Stanley Cup championships under his belt and taking home the Norris Trophy seven times for being the top defender in the league, Lidstrom is a gem of a player with a great record, which would be lucky for any team to have working on the planning
part.
Some may think that Lidstrom decided to call it quits earlier than he should of, but staying in good health was top priority, which is why he is confident with the decision he made.
"I am clear with my decision to retire," Lidstrom added. "I was very comfortable once we got home to Sweden. A few weeks went by and I didn't have the urge to get back to skating again, being a part of a team, preparing for another season. I am very comfortable
with my decision."
Lidstrom was drafted as the 53rd overall during round-three of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by Detroit Red Wings. In his last season with the Red Wings, Lidstrom picked up 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) in 70 games played. In total, Lidstrom has
1,564 games under his belt with 1,142 points (264 goals, 878 assists).
