Former Detroit Tigers Delmon Young pleads guilty to harassment – MLB Update
According to a leading sports website, former Detroit Tigers’ designated hitter Delmon Young today pleaded guilty to charges of intensified aggravation in the second degree, branching from an anti Semitic slur event that took place in April 2012.
Young’s move on Wednesday ended his six month involvement in the case and he will not be available for the Major League Baseball teams as a free agent. The source further claimed that the 27-year-old Young will be participating in a compulsory restorative
justice program at the Museum of Tolerance in New York and also serve ten days of community service.
The hard hitting Young regretted what happened six months ago, claiming that he has the steps to put the issue behind him. Young’s attorney Dan Ollen is convinced that Young will learn from his mistakes to improve his personality. According to New York’s
law, the charges against the former Tigers’ hitter will be reduced to simple violation of harassment.
“Delmon clearly regrets what happened and took the necessary steps to put this issue behind him today," said his attorney, Dan Ollen in an interview. "He has learned from this experience and will continue to do everything he can to improve himself as a person
and player. ... In six months’ time, the charges against Delmon will be vacated and reduced to a simple violation of harassment, which is not a crime under New York law.”
Young is expected to appear in count for his next hearing on May 13, provided he meets all of the duties of his plea that includes completing the community service and appearing for the tolerance program at the Museum of Tolerance.
If Young do not follow court’s instructions, he could face a sentence of up to a year in prison, an MLB official told the reporters on Wednesday. Young had a decent time with the bat in 2012 as he hit .267 with 18 home-runs and 74 RBI’s in his first full
season with the Tigers. It will be interesting to see if he can focus on the task at hand to get himself out of trouble.
