Former England volleyball player sentenced to three years for sexual harassment
Marin John Chapman, a volleyball coach and player from England, has recently been jailed on charges of sexually harassing a teenage girl.
Chapman played with the England team in the 2009 European Championships and was acting as the coach of the first ever sitting volleyball squad from Hull.
Chapman was found guilty by the court for drawing in the victim by making use of Facebook and finally sexually assaulting her. Chapman was able to lure the girl by increasing communication with her over a period of three months. The contact started of via
Facebook, which Chapman used as a tool to gain the trust of the teenager. Afterwards, he took to communicating with the victim by texting her on her cell phone. Gradually, Chapman was able to gain the trust of the girl up to a point where she consented to
meeting him in his car.
It was not until the mother of the teenager discovered more than a thousand text messages from Chapman to her daughter that the events came to light. By taking the right steps, the teenager confided in her teacher about the sexual assault she had been going
through. Later, the social services were also informed of the incident.
Following an investigation, the police arrested Chapman in December last year. Chapman did not try to play innocent in court and pleaded guilty to the charges that he had been accused of. According to Chapman’s stance in the Hull Crown Court, he was involved
in five incidents of sexual acts with the teenager.
Helen Penny, the Detective Constable dealing with the case, made the following statements: "It had been going on for a period of more than three months. By pleading guilty, he has saved his victim from coming to court and going through the ordeal of giving
evidence. We believe there could be more victims and would urge anyone who has been affected to contact the police."
Chapman has been involved with volleyball in England for numerous years and was one of the finalists in the Hull and East Yorkshire Sporting Heroes and Champions Awards in 2009 when he was a player.
