Former Everton striker Yakubu keen on improving for Blackburn Rovers as he awaits national team recall
Blackburn Rovers forward Yakubu revealed he was currently focusing on improving for his club, rather than waiting for a recall from the Nigeria national team. The 28-year-old Nigerian international did well to score a brace against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 in the English
Premier League fixture last week and is hoping to continue his goal-scoring form in the upcoming fixture against Newcastle United.
The fixture against Arsenal at Ewood Park was Yakubu’s first match for the Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Moyes, because of which he
was sent to Leicester City in the January transfer window on a loan move for the remainder of the season.
At the Championship outfit, Yakubu made 20 appearances in the League and managed to score 11 goals, which convinced Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean to bring him to Ewood Park in the summer. His debut resulted in the Rovers’ first win over the season, which
was a close 4-3 but earned them the much needed three points. Keen to build on his first performance, Yakubu revealed he was focused on improving further for the Premier League side.
Yakubu said while speaking to reporters:
“If I'm called up by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nigeria-c2970, it's just to fire up the strikers; the team is not having problems with scoring goals in recent games.”
Yakubu made his debut for the national team in 2000 and has made 57 appearances since then and has scored 21 goals. Even though he was previously a major part of the squad, he has not featured for the Nigerian national team since the 2010 World Cup. The
reason for that could be Yakubu’s lack of playing opportunities for Everton, where he made just 15 appearances in the first half of the season before being sent to Leicester City.
The striker was certain he would receive a call up from the national team if he continued to do well at Blackburn Rovers. Since his switch from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019 to Blackburn Rovers, there have been supporters calling for his inclusion in the squad, which is yet to
come. Nigeria are competing for a place in the 2012 African Nations Cup, the qualifiers for which take place in January.
He continued:
“I just need to prove myself at Blackburn and show that I can still play at the highest level. If I get a call from Nigeria, then I know I must have impressed a lot here.”
