Former F1 driver Derek Warwick says Fernando Alonso is the driver to beat – Formula 1 news
Former F1 driver Derek Warwick has said that Fernando Alonso of Ferrari has emerged as the best driver in the season so far as he has been able to limit the damage for his team.
Warwick said that although Red Bull Racing and McLaren have got the most competitive cars, however, Alonso has performed amazingly well behind the wheel of F2012 in the season until now and is undoubtedly the strongest contender in the title chase.
“The driver to beat at the moment is Alonso,” Warwick said. “He has always been best driver out there, pound for pound, because he has just been superb in what is underperforming car in relation to McLaren and Red Bull. That win in Valencia was just out
of top drawer, it really was amazing. What fantastic year; now we have dominant Red Bull but they are tripping over themselves, so maybe it will be Alonso’s year maybe consistency and good driving is going to pay off because he keeps making the best of his
situation and it is pretty phenomenal.”
The Scarlet team struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme this year and expected to face difficulties in the start of the season. Nonetheless, the two-time world champion has optimised the opportunities for him and his team and is apparently
the favourite driver in this year’s championship.
Presently, the Spaniard is leading the drivers’ championship with 111 points and is 20 points ahead of Mark Webber of Red Bull. Furthermore, he is the only driver who has claimed two race victories in the current season.
It will be important to mention that it is very hard to make any kind of predictions for the upcoming races as there have been seven different winners in the first seven races.
Meanwhile, all the contenders have been making the best of the efforts to make the necessary developments and the significant preparations in order to improve the pace of their cars for the forthcoming races to fight for the championship title.
Over and above, it will be quite interesting to see how the season makes progress for all the contenders.
