Former F1 team Toyota’s president John Howett becomes strong candidate as leader of FOTA – Formula 1
Former president of Formula 1 team Toyota John Howett is being linked with Formula One Teams Association as a potential future leader.
Since Howett has been an inspiration for many in the sport, the members of FOTA also praised his courage and great passion. Unfortunately, he had to leave the sport due to some political reasons as he was quite closely involved and played a leading hand
in the political intrigues of the sport during the time when a breakaway F1 series became a major threat.
Toyota used to be an engine supplying company for the teams as well as a result of which a team by the name of Toyota which was led by Howett emerged back in 2002. The team immediately gained some grounds and scored some pretty good mid-field results in
the sport. They scored their best constructors’ performance back in 2005 with the help of drivers like Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli as they finished in 4th place with 88 points.
Currently, FOTA is led by Martin Whitmarsh, the team principal of McLaren and Eric Boullier, the team principal of Renault. The teams have not discussed the changes for the new Concorde Agreement yet with the officials of the sport including Bernie Ecclestone.
As a result, the new leader of FOTA is not going to be decided anytime soon due to several reasons.
“The bottom line is simple. If there is no Concorde Agreement it doesn't make that much difference. All the agreement is really is us telling the people (teams) what we are going to pay them. If there was no Concorde Agreement, same thing, we would run the
championship and we would pay the people probably a lot less than they get now,” Ecclestone told the media.
Nevertheless, reports revealed that Howett is a potential candidate but it all depends on how the officials make their decisions regarding the new Concorde Agreement and how the two chairmen of FOTA perceive things in the next few months.
