Former FIA president Max Mosley says Bahrain Grand Prix will not take place in 2011 Formula 1 season
Former International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Max Mosley has said that there is no way that the Bahrain Grand Prix will take place in the 2011 Formula 1 season since the situation in the country is very unstable.
He further said if the teams do not agree with the FIA’s decision unanimously, then the race will not take place on its designated date, October 30, 2011 at least.
“I don't think there is the slightest chance the grand prix will actually happen. Apart from anything else, you cannot change the calendar in the way that it's proposed to change without the unanimous agreement of the teams,” Mosley told the media.
According to the FIA, the situation in Bahrain is getting better now and that until October 2011, holding a Formula 1 Grand Prix is not going to be a problem for both the FIA and the organisers of the venue.
However, Human Rights activists from Bahrain claim that the people of the country are not willing to hold such events in the country in such a crucial time as the Kingdom is going through a major political crisis at the moment.
On the other hand, Mosley believes that this matter is in the teams’ hands now which means that the chances of holding a Bahrain Grand Prix this year are very low. Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn has already stated that extending the 2011 Formula 1 calendar
is “unacceptable.”
“The council is organising the event but the teams that participate, if there is going to be a change say for example moving the Indian event, then there has to be unanimous agreement. It's absolutely part of the rules, it’s Article 66 of the International
Sporting Code,” said the former FIA president.
Formula 1 Management chief Bernie Ecclestone, who was in favour of making the Bahrain Grand Prix a part of the 2011 calendar, has also taken a U-turn from this decision. He now believes that Bahrain will not be ready to host a race until October as a result
of which, the event is once again under a cloud of doubt.
