Former Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve says Formula 1 has become boring
The 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has said that Formula 1 has become boring now even for spectators mainly due to the fact that racing has become very predictable.
Villeneuve added gadgets like the Drag Reduction System are making the sport more technology oriented.
“I don't watch the races anymore. I'm done, for the first time ever. I just can't be bothered. Halfway through the race I'm yawning and it's really tough ... and I just get upset,” he said.
He claims that the DRS overtakes are not interesting at all and that Lewis Hamilton’s risky overtaking manoeuvres are much enjoyable comparatively because that is what Formula 1 is all about.
“I really don't care to see overtaking with DRS. I prefer to see Lewis [Hamilton] going for it and sometimes it ends in tears but at least it's fun. All the other overtaking with the DRS, I'm just falling asleep. Useless. Boring. It's not even racing,” said
Villeneuve.
However, the Canadian driver was expected to rejoin Formula 1 with a team of his own in the 2011 Formula 1 season but due to some technical issues, it did not work out. It now seems that he is more thankful that he did not return mainly due to the introduction
of technology to the sport.
“People now think 'Oh, he's going to overtake me. Why bother?' And that's it. No excitement. Nothing,” said the former champion while talking about the DRS.
The Canadian driver recently turned 40 and now it seems that he might never return to Formula 1. However, he did compete in a NASCAR event recently.
Other than that, Villeneuve claims that the stewarding system of races is also quite disappointing these days as mistakes and collisions are a part of the race. He said changing the statistics of the final results is just not right as it discourages drivers
to take chances and probably make a risky overtake.
That is what fans really want to see and unfortunately, that is not the case anymore according to the former Formula 1 world champion.
