Former French player Henri Leconte believes Gael Monfils is completely lost – Tennis News
Former French professional tennis player, Henri Leconte, has stated that Gael Monfils does not the direction in which he is going and his situation can be termed as a nightmare.
Leconte, who was ranked as high as number five in the world at one time, revealed that Monfils has a strange way of doing everything in his sports and daily routine. The 1988 French Open finalist thinks that Monfils might even stop playing tennis but hopes
that he wouldn’t do that.
The former member of French Davis Cup team is participating in the Statoil Masters at London’s Royal Albert Hall shared all this in a recent interview.
Leconte said, “Gael Monfils is completely lost at the moment and doesn’t know what to do. Maybe he’s going to stop playing tennis, you never know for sure. I hope not. He has a strange way of training, thinking about sports, about his life, his entourage,
his everything.”
According to the official reports, Monfils, who was at his prime just a year and a half ago, is on a break because he is suffering from a knee injury. The French star was the highest ranked player of his country in July last year, being at the seventh position
in the world.
Leconte added, “It’s a nightmare. He doesn’t know where to go. He’s lost. One day he wants to be a tennis player, the next day he wants to be a soccer player. The day after that he wants to be a basketball player. He’s losing time.”
Monfils defeated Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen to capture his fourth tour level title at the If Stockholm Open in October last year. The Frenchman also put on a good show at the start of this season, reaching the final of Qatar ExxonMobil Open and Open Sud de
France.
The right-hander played in Rome with an injured right knee and it worsened in his second round loss at the hands of American comeback hero, Brian Baker, at the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur. The French player finally decided to give rest to his knee and stayed
away from tour for four straight months.
Monfils reached the last-four stage in his comeback event, the Moselle Open. The 26-year-old was a quarter-finalist at the Thailand Open in the following week but he was stunned by Patrik Rosenholm in the first round at the If Stockholm Open, getting troubled
again by his knee. The French national did not take part in an event in the rest of the season
