Former HRT driver Pedro de la Rosa hoping for a deal between HRT and Toyota for 2011
According to recent reports, there were many rumours that HRT might sign with Toyota as their main engine suppliers for the 2011 season. Keeping in mind that Toyota rejected any rumours that they might return to Formula 1, Pedro de la Rosa hopes that HRT
comes up with a deal with the Japanese manufacturers.
Pedro believes that HRT might find a break through after signing a deal with Toyota as the engineers in Toyota are exceptionally good and will help the team grow in 2011.
HRT is currently using Cosworth’s engines and it is quite clear that the team is struggling vitally in their debut season. Pedro was replaced by Nick Heidfeld in Sauber and de la Rosa’s plans are still uncertain for 2011. He is currently testing for the
tyre manufacturers for 2011 Pirelli but stated that he would love to return to Formula 1 with HRT if they offer him a spot.
“I would be thrilled, but before I say anything else their sporting project needs to be clear. From there we can begin to move but there is no rush,” de la Rosa said.
However, HRT has still not decided their plans for the next season as the team was recently confirmed by the CEO of FIA Bernie Ecclestone for the next season. There are many rumours that HRT might use Toyota’s unused 2010 car but Pedro claimed that he is
trying to convince the team officials that taking the Toyota route would be the best option for the team right now.
“Clearly after agreeing [an engine and gearbox supply] with Cosworth and Williams, if the agreement with Toyota also materialises then it will demonstrate they want to do things well and in a serious way,” he added.
De la Rosa is not certain what the 2011 season holds for him but hopes to return to the action soon. Pedro had a very disappointing season as he was outpaced by his former teammate Kamui Kobayashi race after race this season. Pedro used to test for McLaren
back in the early 2000s but he has never been impressive enough to take the spot in a reliable and good team.
