Former Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning declined Tennessee Titans expensive deal offer – NFL News
It has emerged that former Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, who was available on the free agency in March this year, rejected a hefty payout offer from the Tennessee Titans.
A section of media has quoted some anonymous sources claiming the player was offered $25 million deal plus a part of ownership in the team. Peyton rejected the offer and instead accepted $18 million a year contract from the Denver Broncos,
the team which he has chosen over a number of others for his pro league career.
The report is in line with the player’s view that he was not looking for the ‘highest bidder’ and this motivated him to decline Titans’ attractive offer.
Bud Adams, Titans’ owner, was the key figure to chase around Peyton but could not convince him for joining his team. This was after the player did a workout for the team and had marathon meetings with the owner and other senior officials.
Some of other teams interested in Manning included the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins. After a week of workouts and talks, he found Broncos fitting his criteria for selection of a future team.
All the above mentioned teams were ready to offer a long-term commitment to the player despite the fact that he is a 14-year veteran and fast approaching to his concluding seasons of the career.
It was rather surprising that so many teams jumped on Peyton’s bandwagon even though he had been through a long phase of uncertainty about his health and fitness. The uncertainty surrounding his health was the main reason that the Indianapolis
Colts waived him off after the long association of 14 years.
Still, the extensive interest of the teams was not surprising given the player has a high-profile career and is the only four-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the league.
He has even very likeable personality, still popular among Colts fans. Also, he has shown to be a person of character, and refusing to get carried away by the Tennessee Titans’ offer is one of its best examples.
