Former Irish international and Barrow Raiders prop Brett McDermott handed two-year ban
Former Irish international and Barrow Raiders prop, Brett McDermott, has been banned from the game for two years. McDermott who announced his retirement from the game during the month of March has been handed over the ban on the use of prohibited anabolic
agents.
The ban was handed over by a National Anti Doping Panel after he was found violation the Rugby Football League’s (RFL’s) anti doping regulations.
McDermott announced his retirement during the month of the March 2011 following the UK’s anti doping agency’s report in which the star prop tested positive for using the prohibited anabolic Drostanolone and 19-Norandrosterone.
Barrow’s also banned the former international prop from participating in club games. McDermott admitted to the use of the performance enhancing agents and publically has apologized on the use of the substances. In April 2011, McDermott announced that he
would challenge the ban imposed by the Raiders to which the subsequent hearings were held and the final decision was announced on Monday, June 6, 2011. The decision was announced on the RFL’s official website on Monday June 6.
The statement read, “The National Anti-Doping Panel have found McDermott guilty of an anti-doping rule violation and imposed a two-year period of ineligibility.” The ban will commence from March 24, 2011 on which McDermott’s provisional suspension was handed
over to him.
McDermott has made 199 appearances for the Barrow Raiders and scored 156 points. However, in this season he has only played one game for the Raiders. The 32-year-old McDermott’s professional rugby career extends over 17 years. Besides playing for Ireland’s
national rugby league side, he has also represented Workington and Whitehaven.
McDermott was one of the Raiders key players and remained a central figure in the club’s outings for several years. Barrow Raiders have reiterated their policy of zero tolerance on using such substances and have backed their words with action against the
player.
Barrow Raiders are in fifth position on the 2011 co-operative Championships table with 21 points and six wins coming from their 11 games in the season.
