Former Jacksonville Jaguars’ QB David Garrard signs with Miami Dolphins-NFL News
Former Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback, David Garrard, has presented himself another opportunity for possibly starting role as he confirmed to have reached a year deal with the Miami Dolphins on Monday, March 19, 2012.
The player had weighed his retirement last year due to a lingering back problem but now says he is hundred percent and would like to play professional league once again.
He was released by Jaguars just before start of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season and Dolphins started courting him since then.
He however did not sign with the team then and instead underwent a surgery to fix his back problem. The decision has proved to be right one for him as he said to have recovered to his previous health and fitness and ready to play once again.
Dolphins who recently been linked to interests for signing the free agent QB, Peyton Manning, and a couple of other quarterbacks, has handed over the contract to Garrard, and assured him of an opportunity on the starting line.
Garrard has played the starting role for Jaguars from 2002 to 2010. Last season was the only time when he due to the health issues did not play for them, and was released before start of the season.
The terms of the deal including its value were not available immediately.
Meanwhile, Dolphins who had a scheduled visit from the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback, Alex Smith, are reported to be going ahead with the plan and have not ruled signing of the player in spite of Garrard’s deal.
Garrard said:
"They didn't say for sure they were bringing another guy in, but they said it's a possibility, whether in the draft or whatever.”
In case Dolphins are unable to reach a deal with Smith, Garrard will be left with, Matt Moore, competing for the side.
Garrard added:
"It's going to be a great competition, and I'm all about that. I'm going to do my best to make sure it's me on opening day."
The player who had impressed the team with his workout said to be excited to join Dolphins. He has especially been happy to work with the new coach, Joe Philbin. Philbin is in his first year with the Dolphins, as they had released their former official later
in the past season.
Garrard further said:
"I just love the vibe. I love everybody's mission and goal, and the purpose they have and the direction they're heading."
It will be great achievement for Garrard if he is been landed the starting role straightway and might boost his hopes of playing the professional league for a longer period of time.
Meanwhile, Dolphins are reported to have released the safety, Yeremiah Bell, to save about $4 million on the salary cap. Bell is going to be unrestricted free agent.
