Former Jaguar Fred Taylor says Del Rio did not deserve to be head coach – NFL News
A former Jacksonville Jaguars player has severely criticized Del Rio who has recently been sacked from the coaching job by Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver.
Fred Taylor, who had been considered one of the greatest players of the Jaguars, went on to say that Del Rio even did not deserve to be a head coach at the Jaguars.
"At the end of the day, (Del Rio)'s not a head coach," Taylor said. "He's a great defensive coach. But he's not a head coach."
Taylor who has played under Del Rio for six consecutive seasons said that he and other players were frustrated by the Rio's style of working on day to day basis.
"With Coughlin, if you came in, if you overstep, you're screwed," Taylor said. "With Jack, you never knew what you were getting. You don’t know if you’ll get a hard-a*s one day, a buddy-buddy one day. You never really knew."
Taylor had been released by the Jaguars in 2008. Following the media's criticism of Del Rio's approach, the player's remarks have become the latest approval Del Rio's firing by the Jaguars.
It has all gone well with Rio until last Monday, a day after he and Weaver confirmed that time had not come then for change in the Jaguars. The surety had specifically come about continuity of the coach’s job without any problem.
The criticism from different quarters including from media over handling of different affairs of his team, especially the issue of Jaguars’ quarterback Blaine Gabbert have sounded that removal of the coach had become inevitable.
This was truer in the context of Weaver’s pre-season message to Rio that he would like to see his making to playoffs this season.
The fear had come true next day on Tuesday when Weaver announced firing of the coach and selling of the franchise in same breath.
The announcement had come as a surprise to Del Rio himself. Expressing his amazement over the news he said that irrespective to his job he never thought of losing a team.
The coach had served the Jaguars for nine consecutive years before being released earlier this week.
