Former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 defender Alan Hansen questions Arsene Wenger’s attitude: EPL News
Former Liverpool defender Alan Hansen has criticised Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for his recent admission that he would be happy if his team ends the 2010-11 Premier League season as runners-up.
Hansen added that Wenger lacks the winning mentality and has to be blamed for his team’s inconsistency in the ongoing season. He said that Wenger’s poor assessment of the season has had a negative effect on the players and they have not shown a real appetite
to win.
The 55-year-old added that Sir Alex Ferguson would never have come out with this sort of statement and would not consider his team to be successful if they finished second best. Hansen, who was part of the 1980’s Liverpool side which won eight league titles,
suggested that none of his team member’s had the same mentality.
Hansen told reporters, "Maybe Arsène has to take much of the blame for that because he is the one who said recently that second place this season would be acceptable for Arsenal. When you start saying things like that, it is only a matter of time before
you start saying that fourth place is acceptable. It sends out the wrong message to the players."
The former Liverpool man added, “At Liverpool, we were always told that first is first and second is nowhere. Arsenal are a big club, so they shouldn’t be going away from that phrase. Clubs such as United and Liverpool would never settle for second best.”
Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw against Liverpool after a last minute equaliser from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dirk-Kuyt-c11348. The Gunners now trail league leaders Manchester United by six points, but Hansen believes that Arsene Wenger’s side are still a big enough team to never settle
for a second place finish.
The Liverpool legend added that winning is everything, which is what matters eventually. He added that despite what some people might say, a team can never win any silverware without a winning mentality. The same has happened to Arsenal, who have not won
silverware for six years now.
