Graeme Souness is of the opinion that Liverpool captain, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196 needs to play a more defensive role in midfield as age and injuries will catch up with him over time.
For many years http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 have looked to their talismanic skipper, Steven Gerrard, to get them out tight spots; whether it is rousing a comeback in the Champions League final or scoring a late, late equaliser in the FA Cup final, Gerrard has always been on
hand to seemingly rescue Liverpool.
However, these past few seasons have not been Gerrard’s best as the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international has suffered from a number of injuries picked up during the course of the campaigns and former Liverpool player and manager, Graeme Souness, believes that a defensive
midfield role may be Gerrard’s only option if he wishes to continue his playing career at the top level.
Gerrard has been absent for lengthy periods this season and in the previous season as well and almost to provide an example, missed the Barclays Premier League clash against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 in midweek through injury as well.
Souness said, “You hope Steven Gerrard comes back fit next year because he has carried this football club for six seven years. He is their one ‘worldy’ and can make the difference in big games...maybe he is just on a downward slope now. I hope I’m wrong,
but I think injuries are starting to play a part which happens when you get a certain age.”
Souness also commented on how Gerrard’s age would be restrictive on his trademark box-to-box runs and that the Liverpool skipper should transform his game. “Maybe he will have to alter his game and be a sitter, a holding midfielder, in the future and not
burst forward into the box and get goals.”
Whether or not that is something that is on the mind of the current Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish remains to be seen, although Liverpool have been found lacking depth in the centre of midfield after the loan of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Raul-Meireles-c30678
and the injuries to Charlie Adam and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lucas-c22528 Leiva, and is surely something that Dalglish will be looking to address next term.
