Former Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles insists move to Chelsea was not because of money
Former Liverpool midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Raul-Meireles-c30678 insisted he had not transferred to the Reds’ English Premier League rivals Chelsea for the money. The 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder completed the shocking move to Stamford Bridge in the last few minutes of the
deadline day of the summer transfer window.
The midfielder, who had a quite summer in terms of speculation linking him to a move away from Anfield, submitted a transfer request on the last day of the transfer window. The two clubs reached an agreement and Meireles was confirmed as a Chelsea player
later the same day.
Despite the sudden move and the criticism it has earned him, Meireles insisted he harboured no ill will against his former side. In addition to that, the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 insisted he had parted ways with Liverpool and manager Kenny Dalglish on good terms.
Meireles said while speaking to reporters:
“These are things that happen in football. I can only say good things about Liverpool. It was a fantastic year.”
Meireles joined http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 on a long term deal. He made a total of 41 appearances in all competitions in his first season with Liverpool and went on to score five goals.
Meireles established himself as a fan favourite in his short spell at the club, winning the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year in 2010-2011. However, his popularity with the Liverpool supporters did not stop him from completing the move to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786.
He has since then been heavily criticized, drawing comparisons to the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Samir-Nasri-c32360, who apparently moved to Manchester City because of the money they were offering him. However, Meireles insisted he was not interested in the money and that was not
why he had decided to leave Liverpool.
Meireles said:
“People think I am a Judas and that it was because of the money. It was not because of that. I will explain it later. Things are still fresh.
It all happened very fast. I am not the only one to blame for my exit from Liverpool, but I will never stop loving the club and I have great friends there.”
The Portuguese midfielder will be once again joining with Andre Villas-Boas, the current Chelsea manager, having previously worked with him at FC Porto. Meireles revealed he was looking forward to helping the Blues return to winning ways and win silverware
in the current season.
He continued:
“The most important thing is to give my all every time and try to help Chelsea win titles.”
Chelsea travel to the Stadium of Light in their next English Premier League fixture to take on Sunderland and Meireles could be awarded his debut over the weekend. It remains to be seen if the former Liverpool midfielder will start or come on as a substitute
later on in the match.
