Former Los Angeles Kings coach Terry Murray moves on with Philadelphia Flyers' AHL Team
Due to the lack of vacancies in the National Hockey League (NHL), former Los Angeles Kings’ head coach, Terry Murray, was forced to accept a job in the minor leagues as he joined the Philadelphia Flyers affiliates in the American Hockey League (AHL), Adirondack
Phantoms, on Friday, June 29, 2012.
Eventually, Terry was bound to get something and he knew that too. It finally happened when Philadelphia Flyers’ general manager, Paul Holmgren, gave him a call.
"I got a call from (Flyers general manager) Paul Holmgren before the draft. We made a commitment over the phone to do this," Murray said. "There wasn't a lot of stuff coming in from the NHL teams after I got fired. The phone rings for about four or five
days and then it goes silent, and there was nothing up until Homer called me.”
Being a hockey coach, it does not matter for Murray whether he is in the NHL or AHL, coaching is what he loves to do and he has found another gig.
Murray was let go by Los Angeles Kings after another disappointing start to a regular season. The 61-year-old was replaced by former Calgary Flames general manager, Darryl Sutter, who eventually led the team to their first Stanley Cup this year in franchise
history.
There are always ups and downs in everyone’s career and for Holmgren, Murray is the man that can improve their affiliate club with his vast knowledge and experience in the major league.
"We feel very fortunate to be able to bring Terry back to the Flyers organization," Holmgren said. "Terry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, is an excellent teacher and a strong believer in the development process of young players."
Philadelphia Flyers also made another announcement as they announced Ian Laperriere, a Flyers player who retired earlier this offseason, to be the new director of player development. The 38-year-old was forced to retire due to health concerns and for him,
he is definitely in a better position now to continue doing what he does best.
Terry Murray has also been the coach of the Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals before heading to Los Angeles.
