Former Lotus Renault GP driver Robert Kubica hopes to return back home soon – Formula 1
Former Lotus Renault GP driver Robert Kubica has said that he is going to leave the hospital within the next 10 days after staying there for around 10 weeks.
The Polish driver went through a near fatal accident during a rally event before the second pre-season test session of the 2011 Formula 1 season. In the accident, Kubica almost lost his right hand besides suffering some major injuries.
Since then, he has been recovering in the Santa Corona Hospital near Genoa. He had to go through a number of surgeries on his right hand as the doctors suspected that the nervous system of his hand might never be able to work as efficiently as it used to.
However, the doctors also believed that the surgeries were a success and that the Pole will recover completely with due time.
However, Kubica recently admitted that he still cannot use his hand completely but is ready to leave the hospital now.
“I am starting to feel a lot better now. My recovery is moving in the right direction: my strength and weight are increasing day on day and as a result I will leave the Santa Corona hospital very soon,” said Kubica.
He added that he is not sure about the exact date of his departure from the hospital. Other than that, he believes that even though the mobility of his hand is quite limited at the moment, the progress is overwhelming and these sorts of problems are normal
in his case.
Besides that, he stated that his arm’s muscles are still very weak due to the long period of immobility of his right hand but he is hoping for the best for his future.
Kubica did not reveal anything about his return to the sport yet but revealed his recovery goals.
“As soon as I leave hospital, I'll head to my home in Monaco for a short period of rest. Then I'll move to Dr. Ceccarelli's facilities in Italy where I will start a deep rehabilitation program and a preliminary soft training programme. The two programmes
will gradually cross over based on the speed of my recovery,” Kubica added.
He stated that he is still in contact with his team and that he has been watching all of the races of the 2011 season so far.
It was expected that Robert Kubica would be one of the top running drivers of the sport in 2011 but unfortunately, it was just not meant to be. Let’s hope the Pole recovers and returns to the race track soon.
