Former Major League pitcher Ugueth Urbina returns to baseball
after serving 7 1/2 years in prison
The Former Major League relief pitcher Ugueth Urbina has completed his 7 ½ years in prison for attempted murder of several workers on his family’s ranch.
"I'm excited to be here," Urbina told reporters at the University Stadium in Caracas, where the Lions played the Zulia Eagles. “The first order of business is pitching in Venezuela," he added.
Ugueth Urbina used to play for several Major League teams including Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies.
He won the World Series title with the Boston Red Sox in 2003 while he was also selected two-times Major League All Star. Before serving in jail, he finished with 3.45 ERA along with 237 saves, 819 strikeouts.
Ugueth Urbina started his career in 1995 from the Montreal Expos platform and showed good commitment. He remained consistent throughout his time at the Expos. Soon he established himself as a reliable player in the roster and always remained at top of his
game.
Ugueth Urbina later was traded to the Boston Red Sox and showed his skills with best of his abilities. His career was flourishing in a smooth manner but in 2005 his life took a u-turn as he was arrested for attempted murder and later had to serve 7 1/2 years
in prison.
Meanwhile, experts believe that Ugueth Urbina still wants to play and if any Major League team signs him, it will be a great sign for the game itself. Some say that the Tigers will certainly consider Ugueth Urbina for one more chance.
Some say if the Tigers traded right-hander Victor Larez to some other team, then they will certainly think to sign some new pitcher as their assistant GM Al Avila had recently said for him.
"He throws 92 to 94 (miles per hour)," said Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila. "He's got a breaking ball, he's got a change-up. He's a great kid. He really works hard at it. The thing is, on a good day you'll see him be real good. Some other days,
you'll go, 'What happened to that kid I just saw that was real good?”
The next few weeks will be certainly critical as Tigers will be thinking to add some more fire power in the roster.
