Former McLaren manager Jo Ramirez believes Sergio Perez is still a child – Formula 1 news
Former McLaren manager, Jo Ramirez believes Sergio Perez is still a child and is too young to drive with McLaren in the 2013 Formula 1 season.
Perez performed convincingly well with Sauber in the first few races of this season and impressed everyone with his remarkable pace. He has been deemed as one of the most talented new comers in the sport as he secured three podium finishes in this season.
However, after signing a multi-year contract with the Woking based team, starting from the next season onwards, he failed score competitive points for his team and faced a lot of criticism over his poor performance in the last few grands prix.
Furthermore, there have been many reports which are stating that the Mexican driver is not experienced enough to race with McLaren.
Nevertheless, the team principal of the British squad, Martin Whitmarsh has expressed that they will prepare the young driver for the next season and said that they have full confidence on their decision.
On the other hand, Ramirez has asserted that although the 22-year-old has got some amazing talent and driving skills, but he is too young to sit behind the wheel of McLaren’s car.
“I think Sergio has done all the steps in the correct way, been very focused and he's been good and very tough. But in the last two years he has developed himself much more as a driver than as a person,” said Ramirez.
Besides, he said that even though Perez has full confidence in his abilities, but he will need to learn a lot of things so as to be able to perform well in his new team.
“He's still a child, very young. As a driver he's full of confidence, when he talks with his engineers he really very much knows what he wants to do on the car and he doesn't let himself be convinced otherwise,” he added. “Where he has to learn a lot, especially
going to a team like McLaren.”
Additionally, he said that the veteran driver will have immense pressure on him in the next season so he must prepare himself well to come up to the expectations of McLaren.
