Former Montreal Canadiens Assistant Coach Kirk Muller named Milwaukee Admirals' Head Coach –NHL Update
Kirk Muller, a former professional hockey player in the National Hockey League (NHL), has been named head coach of Milwaukee Admirals, a franchise in the American Hockey League (AHL) and associate club of Nashville Predators, after remaining assistant coach
of Montreal Canadiens for the past five seasons.
Muller, now 45, was the second overall draft pick in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft in round-one by New Jersey Devils, a team which he spent seven seasons playing with.
He also played four seasons with Montreal Canadiens, two with New York Islanders, two with Toronto Maple Leafs, three with Florida Panthers and the last four with Dallas Stars, until finally retiring after the 2002-2003 regular season.
The Canadaian native from Kingston, Ontario, spent most of hnis life as a player and as an assistant coach, but wanted to move forward recently and started exploring for head coaching positions in the NHL.
Until many unsuccessful interviews, he approached the AHL as a stepping stone and was offered the position by the Admirals.
Prior to that, Muller had spoken to the Ottawa Senators, Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils about vacant positions.
"It's a great opportunity for me to move forward in my career", Muller said about being hired."I'm really excited to go to Milwaukee. It's great to join the Nashville organization here -- the culture and the people, going through this process the last week
to 10 days, it was convincing enough for me to know I can go down to Milwaukee and be supported by really good people".
Muller thinks that Milwaukee would be a great place to start off a coaching career since he could do it in his own style and not have as much pressure like in the big league.
"From friends I know that have been there, it's just a really nice Midwestern city that is underrated", Muller said. "It's kind of a nice little hidden gem".
Currently, the new Milwaukee official is already in Nashville and hopes to learn more about the franchise and it's over four-decade-old heritage which would give him a better insight about the team.
