Former NBA player Jay Vincent arrested for fraud: NBA Update
Former NBA player, Jay Vincent has been to jail for running an employment scam that reportedly deluded nearly 20,000 people across the country. He was arrested after his bond was revoked by the judge in the fraud case.
Last year, the 52 year old Vincent pleaded guilty in front of the U.S District Court after the prosecutors filed a petition against him for committing fraud. Vincent submitted a bond worth 50,000 dollars with the court which bailed
him out since August 2010.
On the submission of another plea recently by the prosecutors to retract his bond as a result of a new fraudulent allegation, the hearing was held on Friday. According to the petition, Vincent advertised workouts for an exhibition
basketball team which does not exist and he received tryout fees from many people in the name of the team. Vincent was also alleged to supply bad checks to those advertising agencies.
The trial announced the revocation of Jay’s bond upon the violation of the terms and conditions and as a result the former Michigan State University’s star Vincent was arrested.
The documents filled on the court states, “Since pleading guilty last year to running an employment scam that authorities said netted at least $2 million, former Michigan State University basketball star Jay Vincent has continued
to defraud people”
According to the documents, Jay charged 85 dollar fee to the participants for a tryout. One of the participants was told that he was selected after the workout session and Vince demanded 275 dollars in order to get into a contract
with the team. Even though that man didn’t fulfilled the request as he became suspicious however many other people were victimized by the fraud.
The former NBA player accepted the responsibility of the employment scam however he denied his involvement in handing out bad checks and receiving money from the people in an interview before the trial. In fact, Jay stated he will
provide proof in the court that he sold the basketball team tryout business back in 2009 which was named Pro Basketball Company.
Jay Vincent will be presented against the Federal Court on 2nd September. Until then, the basketball star will be held at the Newaygo County Jail.
Vincent was selected by the Dallas Mavericks during the 1981 NBA Draft with the 24th overall pick. He had a productive career of 9 years in NBA during which Jay played for Dallas Mavericks, Washington Bullets, Denver
Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Vincent called it quits from NBA in 1990 after a career in which he scored 8729 points, 3167 rebounds and 1124 assists.
