Former NBA star Arvydas Sabonis’ condition under control after a severe heart attack: NBA Update
Former National Basketball Association (NBA) star and recent basketball hall of famer Arvydas Sabonis’ condition is under control after a severe heart attack on Tuesday night in Kaunas, Lithuania.
After visiting Sabonis in Hospital on Wednesday, the general secretary of Lithuanian Basketball Federation Mindaugas Balciunas told the media, “He is feeling really well and recovering fast, he is in a great mood and he is not
going to change his plans to run for the federation's president on October 24.”
Sabonis’ agent Baranauskas also commented on a social media website (Twitter) about his latest health condition.
“Apparently, there is no threat to the Lithuanian legend’s life. Of course, he will still spend the night in hospital.”
Although, the medical reports suggest that the 46 year-old Sabonis is now out of danger but he still needs intensive care and will be remained in hospital for next whole week. His former NBA team, the Portland Trail Blazers in
an official statement also commented on his condition and expressed sympathy with him.
“His condition is believed to be non-life threatening. Our thoughts are with Arvydas and his family at this time. We wish him well in a speedy recovery.”
The eight times European Player of the Year, Sabonis, is considered the best European player to have ever played in the NBA. He was selected 77th in the 1985 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks, but could start his career
in the league as he was too young.
The following year, Sabonis got selected again by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round draft, but again could not play due to the then ongoing cold war between Soviet Union and United State of America (USA).
The 7-foot-3 Sabonis eventually played for the Portland Trail Blazers in 1995 and impressed many with his performances. He spent seven seasons with the Blazers and averaged 12.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
Sabonis has also played for several European professional basketball teams. During his 24 years of career, Sabonis has won many awards including eight-time European Player of the Year award, six-time Euroscar Player of the Year,
and two-time Mr. Europa Player of the Year award. He has also won a gold medal for his country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea.
Sabonis has also contributed a lot in the NBA where he performed wonderfully and selected in NBA All Rookie first team in his very first season. The NBA authorities recognized his basketball skills and seven years’ playing career
in the NBA and inducted him into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame on 4th April, 2011.
